The short version: Oryx stores your data privately in your own iCloud account. We never see your documents, contacts, or any personal information. We collect no analytics and have no advertising. You are in full control.
Who we are
Oryx DMS is developed and maintained by Saad Rodriguez, an independent developer. This Privacy Policy explains how the Oryx DMS app (available on iPhone, iPad and Mac) handles your data.
If you have any questions about this policy, please contact us at saad.rodriguez@icloud.com.
Data we do not collect
We want to be clear about what we do not do:
- We do not collect, access, or store your documents, photos, or files on any server we control.
- We do not collect analytics, crash reports, or usage statistics.
- We do not use advertising networks or tracking technologies.
- We do not sell, share, or rent your personal data to any third party.
- We do not require you to create an account with us.
How your data is stored
All data you create in Oryx — including documents, contacts, folders, tags, and settings — is stored exclusively in two places:
- On your device, in a secure, encrypted database managed by SwiftData (Apple's framework).
- In your private iCloud account, synced automatically by Apple's CloudKit service so your data is available across all your devices.
We have no access to your iCloud account or the data it contains. Apple's own Privacy Policy governs how iCloud data is handled by Apple.
Device permissions
Oryx requests the following device permissions, each used only for the specific purpose described:
- Camera — to scan paper documents using your device camera. Images are processed on-device and saved to your local database only.
- Photo Library — to import images for scanning or to set contact and profile photos. Images you select are stored in your Oryx database only.
- Face ID / Touch ID — to lock the app with biometric authentication and protect your documents. Biometric data is managed entirely by Apple's Secure Enclave and is never accessible to us.
- iCloud — to sync your data privately across your Apple devices using CloudKit.
All permissions are optional where technically possible. The app will prompt you before requesting any permission. You can revoke permissions at any time in Settings.
Document scanning and OCR
When you scan a document, the image is captured by your device camera and processed entirely on-device using Apple's Vision framework. No image or extracted text is transmitted to any external server. The resulting document is stored only in your local Oryx database and, if iCloud sync is enabled, in your private iCloud account.
Contacts
Oryx has its own internal contacts database, separate from your system address book. We do not access your device's Contacts app or system address book. Any contacts you create within Oryx are stored solely in your Oryx database.
Label printing
Label templates and print data are stored locally on your device. When you send a print job, it is handled directly by your device's print system (AirPrint or a connected printer). No print data is transmitted to us or to any third-party service.
Spotlight and Handoff
Oryx integrates with Apple's Spotlight search and Handoff features to improve your experience across devices. This integration is handled entirely by Apple's operating system and no data is shared with us through these features.
Children's privacy
Oryx DMS is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will address the matter promptly.
Data retention and deletion
Because we do not collect or store your data on our own servers, we have no data to delete on our end. Your data lives entirely in your iCloud account and on your devices.
- To delete your Oryx data from iCloud, go to Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Oryx DMS on your iPhone or iPad, or System Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Manage → Oryx DMS on Mac.
- To delete all local data, simply delete the Oryx DMS app from your device.
Security
Oryx uses Apple's SwiftData and CloudKit frameworks, which apply encryption at rest and in transit. On-device data is protected by your device's hardware encryption. iCloud data is encrypted by Apple using industry-standard protocols.
Additionally, Oryx provides an optional biometric lock (Face ID or Touch ID) and a privacy screen that hides content when the app is in the background.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you through an in-app notice. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
